The Chau Gong is a very elegant and distinctive gong that produces a full and sustained wash of musical overtones. Its beauty and traditional appearance make it a centerpiece in any space, indoors or outdoors. The Chinese Chau Gong dates from the Han Dynasty where it was traditionally used in drumming for spiritual practices, large gatherings, and to announce the procession of important people. In modern times, the Chau Gong has found a place in various musical genres, most notably symphony orchestras.

Chau Gongs, also known as a Tam-Tam, are one of the most familiar Chinese gongs. The Chau Gong differs in shape from the Wind Gong by having a rim around the outside edge. It also features a distinctive "target" or bullseye appearance. While some may strike the gong in the center or bullseye, this is actually the "node" of the gong (the spot of minimal vibration) and striking this node is not recommended as it may damage the gong. It is generally recommended to strike 2-3 inches off center, depending on the gong size.

The Chinese Chau Gong is made from a bronze alloy composed of roughly 80% copper and 20% tin, crafted through a combination of hand hammering and lathe work with careful heating and cooling. The center spot and the outside rim retain the black copper oxide formed during manufacturing, while the rest of the gong is polished following lathe work.

Chau Gongs come in a range of sizes, each producing its own distinct full sound: smaller sizes have a richer higher pitch, while larger sizes offer deeper sounds with greater resonance and sustain.
